The mule barn is located at Mile 108.9 above Tidelock at Georgetown, opposite Lock 50 and in the region of the canal known as Four Locks. It is an important historic structure recommended for preservation for use in interpreting a phase of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal operation. The barn was of historic significance during the period of canal operation, 1850-1924. This report provides administrative and architectural data on the mule barn to prepare for preservation treatment. The immediate treatment plan calls for halting further deterioration of the structure and providing structural safety, with the ultimate aim to restore the barn. Limited documentary material was available, and there was no specific mention of the barn in the C & O Company Records. At the time of the report, the mule barn was in dilapidated condition and half of the roof was missing. The mule barn was recorded in the summer of 1974 by the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER). The existing conditions drawings and photographs included in this report were made by that team.
