This report contains the administrative section of the survey report for the Dam 4 structures, part of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Monument (later, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park). Dam 4, the Maryland abutment of it, contiguous embankments of Stop Gate, and the dike between slackwater and canal are prime components of the Dam 4 complex. Dam 4 was identified as a key structure in restoration of the Canal in order to activate canal history and maintain recreational advantages in the slackwater pool of the Potomac above it. Proposed construction activity would consist of stabilization and sealing against water flow through the abutment of Dam 4, restoration of earth fill behind the abutment, extending abutments from the inshore side and dam side to the stop gate, and reconstruction of the winch house. More detailed historical data and architectural data are covered in other report sections. The project construction proposal with cost estimates is also attached.
