During the summer of 2018, a social science research team from the University of Montana (UM) collected data on the number of hikers using multiple trails throughout Glacier National Park (GNP). That was the eighth year of trail use data collection by UM in GNP, and the third year when trails were monitored both inside and outside the Going-to-the-Sun Road (GTSR) Corridor. Similar to previous monitoring efforts, data was collected using infrared trail counters from the company TRAFx. The research team also monitored road use in GNP at 6 different locations: near Avalanche at Red Rocks, at Logan Pass, on Camas road, on Kintla road just after the intersection with Bowman road, at Many Glacier and Two Medicine. These sites were monitored with JAMAR tube counters, and the counters were calibrated by a physical person. Bicycle counts from these sites, and from Apgar bike path appear in a separate report. It should be noted that in summer 2018, Going-to-the-Sun-Road was closed on August 13th due to the Howe Ridge fire, which has affected visitation on several trails.
