The purpose of this report is to assemble documentary information pertaining to the construction of Lock No. 36 of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. The report concludes that documentary evidence is sufficient to appear to warrant a restoration of the structure; if feasible, to the extent of making it operable. Because of its proximity to Harpers Ferry and the frequency and volume of visitation, this component of the canal is determined to possess and important interpretation and recreational potential that would justify its restoration and interpretation. The locks of the C & O Canal fall into three categories: lift, river, and guard locks. This study of Lock No. 36 concerns a lift lock. It is probable that it was completed during the summer of 1833. This history includes the set of specifications for lift lock construction by the C & O Canal Company.
