This paper presents the documentary information which has been gathered pertaining to the construction of this lock. It was intended to be used as a guide in the basic stabilization and eventual restoration of the structure. Lock No. 40 was the fortieth of the seventy-four numbered lift locks built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company from Georgetown to Cumberland. It is approximately five miles below Dam No. 4. A set of instructions concerning the construction of locks was sent to engineers in the field on July 3, 1829. Some time later, a standard set of specifications was prepared, which probably governed the construction on most of the locks on the canal. Construction on Lock No. 40 probably began early in 1833. Details concerning the actual construction of the lock are not reflected in the canal company papers. The report contains details about contracting, construction, building materials, labor, and post-construction history. At the time of the report, the masonry was in a good state of preservation. The lock is located on a part of the canal that was scheduled for restoration, and there was ample physical and documentary evidence upon which to base an authentic recreation of the historic scene.
