This report contains the administrative and historical data for work on Culvert 170, with construction history and existing conditions. The culvert, five and one-half miles east of Hancock, Maryland, was historically significant during the 1850 to 1924 period of operation of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Immediate plans for the culvert called for preservation aimed at preventing further deterioration and providing structural safety. The repair work was planned to be carried out in three phases: the first would treat the upstream end and waste-weir, the second would repair the downstream end, and final phase would finish the central section.
