In 1938, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal was bought by the U.S. Government and placed under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service, to be restored for use as a recreational waterway. This document describes the material evidence, records, justification, and challenges for the restoration work. The canal structures are architecturally characteristic of their time and were used to guide restoration of the canal to that period. In addition to this structural evidence, Canal Company records express the original 1828 specifications that governed the design of the lock keepers houses. The historical interest in the canal was in these features and in the role the waterway played in navigation and westward movement. The canal section nearest Washington was selected for the restoration project addressed in this report due to its accessibility to more visitors. The outline of the project identifies the primary resources included in the restoration of this section of the canal that would be necessary to the operation of the canal for use as a recreational waterway. Report information is presented in sections by type of structure (e.g. culverts, aqueducts, stop locks, houses, etc.). Photos and measured drawings are included.
