This report has been prepared to satisfy in part the research needs for the stabilization and preservation of Dam No. 1 and its associated structures, part of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The purpose is to provide a thorough historic study of the Dam No. 1 complex to insure that stabilization and preservation of the structures are historically accurate. Dam No. 1 and its associated structures are significant architectural and engineering resources of the canal. The complex was important to the operation of the canal because it supplied water for the 5.6-mile stretch of the canal down to the eastern terminus of the waterway. The complex is also associated with the economic development of Georgetown in that excess water from the pool behind the dam was rented out to Georgetown millers. It is unique from other canal dams because the guard lock and feeder were part of the Little Falls Skirting Company built by the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Company's predecessor, the Potomac Company. The document includes a timeline of events associated with the structure from 1795 to 1959, payments made by the company for the construction of the dam, and several photographs.
