A History of the Washington Monument

Olszewski GJ. 1971. A History of the Washington Monument. National Park Service

This study examines the history of the Washington Monument, from when it was first proposed in the 1780s to the finished monument's grounds, use and administration. Most of the report covers the construction of the monument, which the Washington National Monument Society started in 1848 and the Army Corps of Engineers finished in 1885, after decades of delays.
