This report contains administrative and historical information to support the stabilization of Aqueduct No. 3 (Catoctin Aqueduct) of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. The aqueduct collapsed in October 1973 and, because it is located in a zone that the draft master plan proposes to designate for short-term, low density use, appropriate preservation treatment is recommended. Other than maintenance of the existing stabilized ruins, no further restoration or preservation work was recommended. The stabilized ruins would be used as an historic structure exhibit to interpret the construction, maintenance, and operation of the canal. The structure was important to the operation of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and represented a major engineering accomplishment for its period. It was the third of eleven masonry aqueducts constructed to carry the canal across the larger tributaries of the Potomac River between Georgetown and Cumberland, Maryland.
