This report was prepared to satisfy in part the research needs for the preservation/stabilization of the waste structures on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. As no previous historic studies have been made on these structures, the purpose of this report is to present an introductory review of all available documentation relating to their design and construction. The waste structures on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal were important to the proper functioning of the waterway. They were needed to regulate the water level in the canal by providing an outlet for excess water. Canal Company records offer little data on their construction and maintenance because they were regarded to be of lesser importance to the operation of the canal than the locks, aqueducts, dams, and prism.
