Historic Structure Report, Historical Data - Single-Span Aqueducts, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park

Unrau HD. 1974. Historic Structure Report, Historical Data - Single-Span Aqueducts, Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado

This report was prepared to satisfy in part the research needs for the preservation/stabilization of Aqueduct Nos. 6, 8, 9, and 11 on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. Altogether, 11 aqueducts were built by the canal company to span the major tributaries of the Potomac River. Of these, six were single-span aqueducts located on the waterway above Dam No. 5. The purpose of this study is to complete historical research on the four single-span aqueducts above Dam No. 5. It focuses on No. 6 at Licking Creek, No. 8 at Sideling Hill Creek, No. 9 at Fifteen Mile Creek, and No. 11 at Evitts Creek. The study of single-span aqueducts on the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal is basic to an understanding of the functioning of the waterway. It was necessary to build masonry aqueducts to carry the canal across larger tributaries. At the time of their construction, they represented major engineering accomplishments. The research supported the recommended treatment to stabilize and prevent further deterioration of the structures. The draft master plan called for rewatering the canal section on which Aqueduct No. 11 is located, so it was proposed that future consideration be given to the full restoration of this structure. The report also includes a copy of construction specifications for aqueducts, payments made by the Canal Company for the construction of these four aqueducts, drawings, and photographs.
