Culvert No. 200 (The Woodmont Culvert), is located eleven miles west of Hancock, Maryland and one mile above Dam 6. The locally significant structure contributes to the historic significance of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal during its period of operation (1850-1924). Preservation is aimed at halting further deterioration and providing structural safety. The report describes the construction of Culvert 200 in the context of the canal's development. Work began in June of 1837. The contractor for the project was Robert Taylor, and it was likely that it was built according to the specifications for culverts prepared in 1837. The proposed repair work described in the report consisted of removing and repairing 35 feet of the downstream side of the culvert, extending the culvert's foundation to solid ground level or bedrock, and covering the culvert barrel completely with cement. The head wall and wing walls of the culvert will be restored to appear as they did during the operating period of the canal.
