Snell CW. 1978. Historic Structure Report - Lock House No. 12 - The Crommelin House, at Lock No. 20, Great Falls, Maryland, 1828-1925. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service, Denver Service Center. Denver, Colorado
This report was prepared from the data about the Great Falls Tavern, or Crommelin House, that had been collected by various researchers since 1939. Much of this had not been written or put into a usable form to that point. This study was not scheduled or funded for publication, so no original research or additional photographs are included. It was created to be of potential use to interpreters at Great Falls. The document begins with information pertaining to the construction of Lock House No. 12 at Lock 20. When W. W. Fenlon was appointed as lock keeper in 1830, additional money was authorized to construct a kitchen and make enlargements that would facilitate use of the structure as an inn. The building and grounds at Great Falls were officially named "Crommelin" in June of 1831. Work continued on the house until September of 1832. The details described in this report include phases of development, cost, builders, lock keepers, and uses.
