Delving into the Past: Massachusetts Archaeology Month Calendar of Events

2017. Delving into the Past: Massachusetts Archaeology Month Calendar of Events. Massachusetts Historical Commission

Calendar includes information about Massachusetts Archaeology Month October 2017. From introduction: "This year there are over 60 events that promote awareness of the Commonwealth’s rich archaeological past through fun and engaging programs. Massachusetts Archaeology Month is about archaeology in your community and the world. It is an opportunity to learn about the people who have lived in the area over the last several thousand years. Many events highlight local Native American, Colonial, and Industrial history, while others explore the archaeological past in other countries. We have numerous events focusing on what can be learned from archaeology and how that knowledge can be applied. From ancient Egyptian mummies to “forgotten” Massachusetts towns, at many of this year’s events you can experience first-hand how archaeologists unlock the mysteries of the past. Museums, local historical societies, libraries, avocational archaeologists, universities, local historical commissions, professional archaeologists, and other organizations have planned a variety of exciting events for you and your family to enjoy. Learn about recent archaeological investigations in your town, visit an archaeological lab, meet an archaeologist and listen as they discuss their latest projects, explore the inner workings of a museum, or take part in a walk or hike. Teachers can schedule special field trips for their classes to take part in hands-on archaeological activities, or visit one of the numerous lectures presented throughout the state. There are many events geared toward children that are enjoyable for the whole family. There is something for everyone who has a curiosity about the past." Funding was provided in part by a 2018 Historic Preservation Fund grant administered by the Massachusetts Historical Commission (project number MA-18-10020, grant number P18AF00086) and the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
