As part of the continuing effort to understand the effects of prescribed fire on the entire ecosystem, this study investigated the changes in soil nitrogen mineralization patterns for two years following a prescribed fire in a ponderosa pine stand in Bandelier National Monument. Fire is a necessary component of Southwestern ponderosa pine forests, releasing essential nutrients tied-up in undecomposed organic matter. However, it is not known how long the beneficial effects of fire persist within the soil. The objective of this ongoing study was to determine the magnitude and duration of the increase in soil nitrogen mineralization and nitrification following the prescribed fire.
