From Project Overview: "The purpose of the project was to provide needed updates to the City of Cumberland’s forty-year-old comprehensive historic resource inventory. The City of Cumberland will use the data developed through this survey project to fulfill its responsibilities to manage historic resources within the city. The project provided documentary, photographic, contextual, and analytical information on historic resources including the Jane Gates Property and Gates Family Houses (Gates Houses), two potential districts—The Dingle and White Oaks—and a resurvey the Canada-Viaduct District (AL-IV-A-142). Financial support for this project came from Maryland’s Certified Local Government (CLG) program, which is administered by the National Park Service and the Maryland Historical Trust (MHT). CLG programs are administered by the federal Historic Preservation Fund. Maryland awards 10 percent of its annual allocation to CLG projects every year. The City of Cumberland provided partial funding as required by MHT and hired Historitecture, L.L.C., to complete the project. Historitecture reviewed existing background information, including historic maps, existing MIHP Forms, Geographic Information System (GIS) information, State of Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation data records, and information provided by the City of Cumberland. Survey and documentation included the following tasks: conduct field surveys of the four survey areas; define survey district boundaries; prepare Determination of Eligibility forms and complete MIHP survey district forms for each survey area. This report summarizes the project and follows the Secretary of the Interior’s Guidelines for Historical Documentation (26 CFR § 800.4) and the Standards and Guidelines for Historical and Architectural Investigations in Maryland (MHT, 2000)." Funding was provided in part by a 2016 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the City of Cumberland (project number MD-16-013) administered by the Maryland Historical Trust (grant number P16AF00024) and the State, Tribal, and Local Plans and Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Cumberland, Maryland is a Certified Local Government.
