The North Coastal water quality survey was designed to provide a synoptic picture of water quality for the coastal area between Saugus and Essex. Sampling the freshwater streams composed most of the effort. Except for the Saugus-Pines, North, and Essex Rivers, all of the streams were very small and often unnamed. Station locations are depicted in Figures I and II. Flow in these smaller streams was approximately 3 cfs (cubic feet per second) or lower. Water quality analyses were performed on grab samples collected on Tuesday and Thursday; thus each station was sampled twice. One additional dissolved oxygen-temperature data set was collected for stations NC1-NC20. The area between Saugus and Beverly was sampled on June 15 and June 17, 1976. In addition, nine stations were sampled in Salem-Beverly Harbor on June 15. Harbor sampling on June 17 was aborted because of adverse weather. The area between Beverly and Essex was sampled on July 27 and July 29, 1976. Because of laboratory commitments to other surveys, several of the analyses conducted on samples from stations NC21 through NC43 were not run on samples from stations NC1 through NC20. Analysis of total solids was done only on samples from stations NC1 through NC20 and SB1 through SB9.
