Non-destructive, endemic Hawaiian Bark Beetles form a radiation of native species across the Hawaiian Islands. They are in the same subfamily as the Coffee Berry Borer and may be subject to non-target impacts from biological control agents for the pest. There are 21 described native Hawaiian species and another 20 may await discovery. Through developing an understanding of the ecology, range and taxonomy of the native bark beetles, we will be able to minimize the impact of augmentative biological control releases by identifying areas of higher and lower risk for non-target impacts allowing for a broader range of CBB control strategies.
