Design Guidelines: Hinton Historic District

From introduction: "The City of Hinton, Summers County, West Virginia, and the Hinton Historic Landmarks Commission have long recognized the significance of Hinton's history to its continued development and preservation. The Historic District's association with the railroad and patterns of transportation is deeply entrenched in Hinton's history. The Hinton Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places September 30, 1983 and May 19, 2005 (Boundary Revision) and contains approximately two hundred and forty-three (243) properties exhibiting the significant role that historic preservation has played in Hinton. In recognizing the citizens’ desire to protect the historic qualities that are the heritage of Hinton, the following design guidelines for maintenance, rehabilitation and new construction have been developed by the Hinton Historic Landmarks Commission. The design guidelines were developed to reflect the specific character of Hinton's historic resources. They are intended to assist property owners in maintaining, rehabilitating, repairing and adding to historic buildings while respecting the original significant character that exists today. They are generally written to allow for individual application and flexibility for owners, while retaining the important architectural features of the building in question." Project funding was provided in part by a 2017 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Hinton Historic Landmarks Commission (project number WV-17-041) administered by the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History, State Historic Preservation Office (grant number P17AF00018) and the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior.
