This report attempts to document the physical history of the Scalehouse at Christiansted, St. Croix from the time of its construction, through succeeding years of maintenance and alteration, and to the time of the report. It is based on research in the principal repositories of the official records of the former Danish West Indies. When supplemented by an on-site examination of existing details, the complete report should permit an authentic rehabilitation or restoration of the building. The Scalehouse is a two-story structure on the wharf in the town of Christiansted, with one side facing the town square and the other facing the harbor. It was designed by the Building Inspector of the Danish West Indies Government, Ludvig Schellerup, and constructed between November 1855 and September 1856 to replace a wooden scalehouse that had been built on the same site early in the 1790s. The report is preceded by correspondence regarding the review and approval of the report. This is the third in a series of NPS Historic Structures Reports on the six buildings preserved within the boundaries of the Virgin Islands National Historic Site, Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands. A separate set of reports, "Condition Report of Historic Buildings, Virgin Islands National Historic Site, Christiansted, St. Croix, Virgin Islands" (Frederick Gjessing, May 1956), prepared for several buildings and including images, are under the same cover.
