2018 Cambridge Historic District Design Guidelines
Wagner R and David H. Gleason Associates, Inc.. 2018. 2018 Cambridge Historic District Design Guidelines. Cambridge Historic Preservation Commission; Maryland Historical Trust. Cambridge, Maryland
From introduction: "The 2018 Cambridge Historic District Design Guidelines were developed to assist the Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) in reviewing proposed projects within the City’s Historic District. The HPC is charged with preserving the intrinsic qualities of the Cambridge Historic District, such as the design of its buildings, public ways, landscaping, streetscape, and views associated with the Choptank River. The Guidelines do not seek to stop progress or prevent inevitable change; rather, they seek to ensure that changes are appropriate to Cambridge’s unique historic character. Property owners can use these guidelines to identify projects that are likely to be approved by the HPC and to assist in making decisions about whether to (i) identify/preserve/restore versus (ii) repair versus (iii) replace architectural aspects of their historic properties. The Guidelines are also used to prevent inappropriate demolition and demolition by neglect: the HPC strives to work in concert with the Unified Development Code, the City Department of Planning & Zoning, as well as Code Enforcement to ensure that historic structures are not left to deteriorate, or that residents remove or demolish significant historic architectural elements or details without first getting approval. Furthermore, the Guidelines help to ensure that rehabilitation, additions, changes to existing buildings and landscapes, and new construction, are compatible with the context and character of the buildings, landscapes and streetscapes of the Historic District." Project funding was provided in part by a 2017 Historic Preservation Fund grant to the Cambridge Historic Preservation Commission (project number MD-17-013) administered by the Maryland Historical Trust (grant number P17AF00016) and the State, Tribal, Local, Plans & Grants Division, National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior. Cambridge, Maryland is a Certified Local Government.
