This report describes the history of Sharpsburg during the Civil War, particularly during and after the Battle of Antietam. Although Sharpsburg was not part of the battlefield at Antietam, Confederate soldiers camped and foraged in the town before and during the battle, and Union forces occupied the town for six months after the battle. Although the town was not severely damaged during the battle, the battle's aftermath brought disease and supply shortages as a result of the extended occupation. As well as a historical overview, the report presents a review of damages claims brought by Sharpsburg residents against the federal government after the Civil War and an inventory of current Sharpsburg buildings that date to the war.
