Effect of Rehabilitating and Refurnishing the Old Customhouse, Christiansted National Historic Site, St. Croix, Virgin Islands

Staff, National Park Service. Effect of Rehabilitating and Refurnishing the Old Customhouse, Christiansted National Historic Site, St. Croix, Virgin Islands. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

The National Park Service proposed to rehabilitate and refurnish the exterior and interior of the Old Danish Customhouse, a unit of Christiansted National Historic Site. The structure served as the Christiansted Library until 1974 and would require major repair to insure its preservation and the retention of its historic appearance. The purpose of this project is to restore the structural and architectural integrity of the building, return its condition to a properly maintained appearance, and stabilize it so that routine and periodic maintenance will suffice for its upkeep and preservation. The intent of the rehabilitation of the Old Customhouse is to preserve intact the masonry remains that have survived more than two centuries and, to the greatest degree possible, preserve the early 19th century masonry and woodwork additions. The Old Danish Customhouse retains in its ground floor the remains of two earlier buildings, the mid-18th century residence of the bookkeeper for the West India and Guinea Company and a section of a warehouse erected in the 1730s and rebuilt in 1805. This document describes the property, the proposed work, and effects of the work to the appearance and fabric of the historic structure. Photos and measured drawings of the existing condition (ca. 1970) are included.
