Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, was a French nobleman who volunteered to fight in the American Revolution before France became involved with the war. In addition to the history of the statue, the study also provides a brief biography of Lafayette.
