This report contains information about the Swan Tavern, part of Colonial National Park (later Colonial National Historical Park). Photos with written captions show work completed in July of 1958. A compilation of inventories, wills, and deeds shows the ownership of the property (Lot #25). For over one hundred and forty years, the Swan Tavern stood on Main Street in Yorktown. It was built around 1720. During the Civil War, while the town was occupied by Union forces under McClelland's command, an explosion destroyed everything in the vicinity of the courthouse, including the Tavern and its outbuildings. In 1934 it was reconstructed by the National Park Service, based on 1796 insurance records, site excavations, and documentary data.
