This document concerns the stabilization of Jamestown Island features, namely the Brick Kiln and the Shirley House. Details and recommendations about treatment of those structures is preceded by discussion of definitions, in which the author articulates aspects of preservation at a historical site (location, design, materials, workmanship) and how they relate to reconstruction. He suggests that preservation is the protection of the originality of a structure from deterioration, and stabilization is a generic term designating the techniques by means of which the preservation objectives are realized. This discussion includes a comment on the status of stabilization techniques. Specifics about stabilization work performed on the kiln and the Shirley House are included, with several photographs.
