This report describes the outbuildings that existed at the Dudley Digges home in Yorktown during the 18th century, in preparation for reconstruction. The home was known to have at least a kitchen, granary, smoke house, stable, and well house. While a number of houses from that period remained extant in Yorktown, none of the original outbuildings survived. These structures were a necessary part of colonial living and therefore an important element of the historic townscape. The function of each often determined their arrangement. The report describes the physical history of the Dudley Digges House property (lots 77 and 79), based on the limited documentary evidence and archeology. Each individual known outbuilding is described. Since no colonial outbuildings existed in Yorktown, any reconstruction must be conjectural, incorporating colonial details from Tidewater Virginia prototypes and adapting them to their foundation sites. Not all of the outbuildings were recommended for reconstruction in this report due to insufficient evidence. Report includes historic photographs, measured drawings, cost estimates.
