This study is a modified historic structure report for the archeological remains of William Rogers's pottery shop on Lot 51, Yorktown, Colonial National Historical Park. Reconstruction of the pottery kiln and shop was not contemplated, although some minor reconstruction of elements that had been damaged by vandalism should be attempted. A permanent structure was to be constructed that would be large enough to protect the ruins, provide facilities for interpretation, and provide space for storage and study of artifacts. Additional archeological excavation was scheduled for the site. William Rogers established his pottery in Yorktown and produced large amounts of lead-glazed earthenware and salt-glazed stoneware. While the precise date on which Rogers began potting operations is unknown, the earliest dated piece of earthenware found at the site to that point dates to 1720. This report includes a considerable volume of data on pottery history, needed to develop an interpretive program and to place Rogers's pottery in perspective. It includes a partial listing of pottery kilns in British Colonial America, including potters and types of wares (1630s to 1780s). The findings of the research and archeology investigation presented in this report contribute to an understanding of Rogers's pottery enterprise.
