The two sections of this report describe and illustrate the processes employed in the manufacture of hand made brick and cypress shingles used throughout Virginia in colonial times. It includes details of the manner in which these techniques were used in masonry and in roofing, provided in order to register an authentic record of this period of construction. Information is provided about the natural environment from which the construction materials were created, the manufacture process, and use (both historic and for restoration and reconstruction). Photos accompany each of the two sections.
