The freshwater streams of Manchester Bay were monitored from 1988-1990 to document characteristics of rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax, spawning runs. All freshwater drainages into Manchester Bay were surveyed in 1988 and three streams were selected for monitoring based on knowledge of existing smelt runs and the presence of suitable spawning habitat. Chubb Creek, Bennett Brook, and Sawmill Creek were routinely sampled under the Massachusetts Bay Smelt Spawning Habitat Monitoring Program. The primary objective of the program is to document temporal, spatial and biological characteristics of smelt spawning in Massachusetts Bay river systems. The resulting baseline data can be applied to resource management goals of protecting valuable estuarine and river habitats and sustaining the Commonwealth's smelt fisheries.
