Stabilization of Structures 6 and 86, Jamestown Island, Colonial National Historical Park, May - June 1950

Steen CR. 1950. Stabilization of Structures 6 and 86, Jamestown Island, Colonial National Historical Park, May - June 1950. Historic Structure Report. U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service

This report presents the stabilization work on Structures 6 and 86, Jamestown Island. It was done to see whether purely mechanical preservation measures were enough to preserve the brick foundations of Jamestown Island from weathering. The work began on May 11 and was completed by June 13, 1950. It was suggested that the walls were not subject to immediate destruction, but they should be guarded against frost action and visitors. Ground water was identified as a threat to the condition of walls in these two structures, and they should have a good life expectancy if properly sealed. The method is described, incorporating previous stabilization work from 1941. Photographs show the existing conditions and work.
