Ammann & Whitney, Consulting Engineers, were notified on November 2, 1954 to proceed with an investigation of the structural soundness of the Yorktown Victory Monument, as reported in this document. The cornerstone of the monument was laid in 1881 and the crowing figure was set on August 12, 1884. In 1942, it was damaged by lightning. At that time, a report on visible damage was made, and work was performed in 1949 to replace and repair damaged sections. This investigation proceeded due to doubts about the safety of the monument shaft and base. The investigation includes visual analysis, wind loads and stability analysis, and stability analysis. Recommendations address the system of lightning protection and methods for strengthening the shaft. Photographs, illustrations, and results of the analysis are included.
