Although these safety protocols and procedures are designed to avoid serious emergencies in the field, it is essential that field personnel are prepared and informed on how to react in an emergency situation in the backcountry or otherwise. The collaborative nature of this project requires that field crews are constantly traveling across different land ownerships, thus field personnel should communicate with regional offices of the associated land management agency where appropriate to abide by local safety procedures. In most instances, though, a general emergency procedure and chain of command specific to the local agency conducting surveys is necessary. This Safety SOP specifies a functional chain of command in reference to the structure of the Northwest Bat Hub at OSU-Cascades; however, the structure is generalized and easily adaptable to any agency referring to this protocol. An annual establishment or review of a chain of command and general emergency procedure should be a priority before any field operations occur. Proper CPR/AED and first aid training in conjunction with this SOP for reference will prepare field crews appropriately for most emergencies they could encounter.
