North American Bat Monitoring Program Regional Protocol for Surveying with Stationary Deployments of Echolocation Recording Devices.. National Park Service

This SOP describes the step-by-step procedures for training field personnel. By design, the technical expertise, knowledge, skills, and abilities required of field staff are relatively minimal for this protocol in order to ensure long-term sustainability. The SOP serves primarily as a reference for the Hub Coordinator, Hub Assistant, and other support staff that may be involved in training (e.g., Crew Leads). Training of field personnel is conducted prior to the start of the field season, however, as needs arise, additional training can be conducted following the procedures and recommendations in this SOP. Guidance on pre-season preparations including equipment compilation are discussed in SOP 1. Safety procedures are discussed in SOP 2. Guidance on selecting detector locations including the appropriate habitat to look for is discussed in SOP 4. Procedures for detector deployment and operation are detailed in SOPs 5 and 6, respectively. Procedures for data management including field data collection are in SOP 7. These SOPs and the field manual (See SOP 12) should be used to guide training. Electronic copies of the field manuals are provided to each field contributor for reference during the survey event.
