The purpose of this SOP is to describe the step-by-step procedures for operating detectors for acoustic monitoring surveys of bat populations. The primary detector used for this monitoring is the D500X (Pettersson Elektronik, Uppsala, Sweden) because it is broadly known for recording superior call quality and consistency with past and present wide-use in the region. An exception has been made for the SM4BAT (Wildlife Acoustics, Maynard, MA) because it has recently shown an increase in recording quality and is generally more affordable compared to other detector brands and models. Both detectors record in full spectrum format and data are compatible with analysis using Sonobat auto-classification call analysis software. This SOP will cover operation and settings for both the D500X and the SM4BAT. Detector settings have been selected for standardization in statistical analyses.
