The purpose of this SOP is to describe the basic hierarchical occupancy modeling framework and direct the user to important references and resources outside of this protocol. The intended audiences for this SOP are the statisticians and analysts that are responsible for producing periodic occupancy model-based assessments of bat species distribution status and trend. However, we believe it is important for program leaders and others who need to be conversant in the full protocol to also be familiar with the general approach outlined here. One reason for this is that many of the field-level data collection will be used as occupancy model covariates (explanatory variables). Decisions made in the field, including troubleshooting in “real-time”, will have downstream impacts to analyses and interpretations of parameters estimated through the procedures outlined here. We use the occupancy model to support inferences about bat species occurrence probability, the probability that a bat species occurs in a grid cell during the summer season (without requiring assumptions about type of use [e.g., pup-rearing, foraging, commuting]), and related metrics (e.g., occurrence “growth rate”, λ), over space and time.
