2019 SFAN Science Symposium. 2019
On September 5, 2019, the San Francisco Bay Area Network of national parks hosted its 9th Science and Natural Resources Symposium. This day-long event brought together park staff, volunteers, and partners from a wide range of disciplines to share science-related research, management, and outreach efforts taking place in support of the National Park Service mission. The 2019 theme was Science and Stewardship for Resilient Parks. We use science as a part of stewardship to better understand and take care of these park lands, and we bring our science to the public through education and community science programs. This work is especially crucial in this era of rapid environmental change. At the 2019 symposium, we learned from one another about how are we using science to inform stewardship and improve ecological health in these landscapes, and in the communities that need them. We featured projects and presentations that grapple with big questions within that theme. What are we doing to enhance, celebrate, and defend biodiversity in our parks? How are flora and fauna adapting to changing environmental conditions, and how we are adapting to managing for those changes? What does it mean for a landscape to be resilient, and how does our work reflect this? How can we scale up our efforts, expand collaboration, and amplify what we are learning? How are we engaging communities in this work?
