This report is the result of an investigation conducted by Lee Nelson (author), Gordie Whittington, and William Degler from September to 23 September 23, 1971. The study contains photographs, labeled floor plans, and lists of notable features for each area or room. These sections attempt to describe the features, call attention to original details or changes that have occurred, and note problems that should be considered in any restoration or maintenance programs. The format is intended to facilitate further study of individual rooms and features. The Nelson House is a pedimented gable mansion with masonry details that is an exemplary early Georgian Tidewater Virginia mansion of the first half of the 18th century. In general, the report recommends that the Nelson House is of such historical and architectural significance that it should be carefully recorded, mechanically modernized, authentically restored, and furnished as far as possible.
