Southside Historical Sites, Inc., under contract with the National Park Service, was responsible for research, design, and supervision of the battlefield project from archeological investigations to the end of construction in June 1976. The study of Yorktown Battlefield, the scene of the battle in which the British were defeated in October 1781, was one of the major efforts of the NPS during the years leading up to the nation's bicentennial celebration. This project involved archeology and restoration/reconstruction of portions of the battlefield, namely the Grand French Battery, Mid-Second Siege Parallel, American Redoubt No. 2, and additional trenches. Powder magazines, trenches, gun platforms, and palisades were also rebuilt. This report describes the phases of the project, including background information on eighteenth century earthen fortifications, methods by which the fortifications were rebuilt, problems encountered, modifications in design necessitated by visitor usage, maintenance, and other considerations.
