This combined study of Yorktown sites and colonial rural fences is intended to provide detailed knowledge of what the area around Yorktown was like during the Siege of 1781. The first part lists developed sites and attempts to determine what land was wooded and what was open ground (pasture, cultivated ground, or land designated as old fields on which forest cover had not yet grown). The second part is designed to delineate types of enclosures common to this area that might have existed in the environs of Yorktown in 1781. In the planning and development of the Yorktown Battlefield area, attempts to closely approximate conditions at the time of the 1781 siege will add authenticity to the picture that the park is presenting. This report aims to help that goal. In the first part of the study, the battlefield has been divided into a number of sections and each section is considered separately.
