When the kilns and associated artifacts at the Glass House were exhumed in 1948, the surrounding chemical and physical environment changed to an unbalanced condition and the kiln stones began to deteriorate at an accelerated rate. The report is a study of the conditions influencing the stability of thee kiln stones, such as geologic setting, ground water conditions. It describes steps that were taken to reduce the moisture gradient between the soil and the atmosphere, and it provides recommendations for further study, short-term measures, long-term intervention, and monitoring.
