The Moore House at Yorktown, made famous by the surrender of Lord Cornwallis to General Washington and the Allied French Forces, was the first historic building to be restored by the National Park Service. This report by Charles E. Peterson was first published in 1935. It is a significant document in the history of the American preservation movement and was the progenitor of all Historic Structures Reports prepared by the NPS. This report combined the then known facts relating to the physical evolution of the house, together with mention of the ''commemorative'' work carried out by the Yorktown Centennial Association for Centennial observances in 1881. The report also described the work carried out by the NPS architects in the few weeks before the Sesquicentennial Celebration of October 1931. Soon afterwards, as more old views of the house came to light, it was possible to incorporate the discoveries in work that was completed in 1934. This report marks the first real attempt at accountability of the scholarship and the architectural investigation involved in an historic building restoration. This edition was published by the National Parks and Conservation Association for distribution at the Bicentennial Celebration.
