This report describes the establishment and history of the Cape Henry Lighthouse at the junction of the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. Construction of the first lighthouse was started in 1791, following from one of the initial acts of the First Session of the 1st Congress in 1789. It includes details of the location, establishment of the lighthouse, construction, and use. A new light at Cape Henry was completed in 1881. In 1939 the old Cape Henry Lighthouse was the scene of ceremonies during the week of August 7 commemorating the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Lighthouse Service. The report notes the alterations that have occurred to the structure over time and its condition at the time of the survey. It is suggested that it be included as part of the National Park System. Information about other colonial lighthouses is included in the Appendix.
