Built in 1751, the Edmund Smith House is the most precisely dated of all early homes in Colonial National Historical Park. It was the residence of members of the Smith family and its descendants who were prosperous merchants, soldiers, and public servants during Yorktown's early years and the Revolutionary War. During the Revolutionary War, the house received damage from French and American cannonballs, and it sheltered troops during the winter of 1781-1782. In 1975, the exterior of the home was restored by the National Park Service to its 18th century design, with major repairs to the roof, foundation, doors and windows, interior finishes, and utility systems. The Burcher Building was constructed on Yorktown's main street after the Civil War. It housed Mrs. A. Y. Burcher's "Spinning Wheel Antique Shop" from the 1930s until 1965. In 1975, the National Park Service structurally stabilized the building and restored its exterior. The purpose of the Historic Structures Preservation Guide is to inform park personnel of suitable preservation procedures for these structures, including the appropriate materials, supplies, and techniques to complete all repair and maintenance work for the exterior of the buildings, foundations, and structural framing. This guide is organized into three parts and discusses both the Smith House and Burcher Building. The first part of the Guide covers housekeeping, routine maintenance and cyclical maintenance. Information relevant to each specific building is printed on contrasting colored paper. Parts 2 and 3 of the guide, "Construction Data" and "Supplemental Research Data," apply to both buildings.
