This report is one of several on historic structures in the Dungeness Historic District of Cumberland Island National Seashore. It concerns the history and architectural details of the Tabby House. It is the oldest building in the Dungeness Hisotric District. Based on its style, material composition, and site, the structure was probably built around 1800. The building is a composite representing two principal periods: the original construction (ca. 1800), and the Carnegie alterations of ca. 1900, plus minor changes at other times. The report recommends holding the the structure to its present form and appearance. The report was based on field investigation conducted in March and May, 1976 by Project Historical Architect David Henderson and Historical Architects Curtis Lester and Leslie Siroky of the Denver Service Center as part of the Southeast Region Structural Preservation Program. Sections describe the appearance and condition of parts of the structure (interior and exterior) with recommendations, analysis, and cost estimates.
