The National Park Foundation initiated this project to determine the feasibility of establishing a specialized conference center at Plum Orchard Mansion on Cumberland Island National Seashore. The report considers other possible uses for the mansion (education center, natural history museum, Island history museum, house museum, and country inn), and the feasibility for using it as a conference center. The feasibility was determined by using primary data, in the form of a questionnaire survey and personal interviews, and secondary data, mostly reports and brochure of existing conference centers. and related operations. It is determined that a conference center is a unique opportunity to attract environmental and business groups, and it could be supplemented by a country inn the addition of additional bedroom units. This project was supported by the Johnston family, who were donors of the Plum Orchard mansion, 12 acres of grounds, most of the mansion's furnishings, and maintenance funds to the National Park Foundation. Plum Orchard mansion was completed in 1898. In addition to the mansion, the complex includes other buildings and property.
