This report is one of several on historic structures in the Dungeness Historic District of Cumberland Island National Seashore, specifically concerning the Boat Captain's House and Cistern. This house is about 150 yards from the Dungeness Dock, which was being restored. It has a view of the Cumberland Sound and is about 1/2 mile northwest of the Mansion ruins. In both form and use, the clapboard siding suggests a New England origin. The style and general character could be appropriate to an 1884-85 construction era. Because of the relative isolation of the estate, the captain would have been a vital staff member during the Carnegie's tenure. The report sections describe features, conditions, and recommendations, along with cost estimates and drawings. The report is based on a field investigation conducted in March and May, 1976 by Project Historical Architect David Henderson and Historical Architects Curtis Lester and Leslie Siroky of Denver Service Center as part of the Southeast Region Structural Preservation Program.
