This Historic Structure Report is one of two on historic structures in the Plum Orchard Historic District of Cumberland Island National Seashore. It concerns the architectural data for the carriage house. The carriage house is said to have been built in the 1890s, prior to the mansion. It was used to house the workers who were building the mansion and other structures. The carriage house is one and on-half stories high, located about 100 yards from the mansion and framed by mature pines, live oaks, and other trees. It contrasts with the mansion, both in structural history and appearance. The carriage house was built as a single entity, while the mansion had several additions to the central structure over a period of years. This report describes the structure and existing conditions, with recommendations, drawings, and cost estimates. The recommendations suggest that it should primarily be a working building in the park operation, and although it has some interpretive value, it would not be emphasized to visitors This report is based on field investigation conducted in May 1976 by Project Historical Architect David Henderson and Historical Architects Curtis Lester and Leslie Siroky of the Denver Service Center as part of a Southeast Region Structural Preservation Program project.
