The purpose of this thesis is to document the existing condition of an agricultural landscape associated with a 19th-century Sea Island cotton plantation and provide the basis for the future development of a comprehensive interpretation and management plan. The landscape components in this study include the agricultural field patterns and the plantation's spatial organization, both of which were masked by stages of forest succession at the time of this report. Other components include crops, livestock, labor, agricultural technologies, and the effects of post Civil War land use activities on the landscape. The significance of the Stafford Historic District is due to its association with Robert Stafford, the Carnegie family, and the production of cotton. The remnants of slave quarters, a pre-contact archeological site, and the Carnegie buildings establish the significance of the district in areas of archeology, agriculture, architecture, and landscape architecture. The Cooperative Park Studies Unit at the Institute of Ecology, University of Georgia, issued the CPSU Technical Report series in order to make data and results from research and monitoring projects more easily and quickly available to interested scientists and National Park Service staff.
